A PepperBall loadout isn’t just a collection of parts. It’s a system. And like any system, every component matters.

We’ve seen agencies buy launchers from one place, projectiles from another, and air systems from a third. Then they wonder why nothing works right when it counts.

Don’t be that agency.

A proper PepperBall launcher configuration starts with understanding how launchers, projectiles, air systems, and accessories work together. Then you match that system to your unit type, your environment, and your mission.

Let’s build it right.

The Core Components of a PepperBall Loadout

Every PepperBall loadout has four core components.

  • That’s your platform, and you’ve got options: Compressed air, CO₂, or nitrogen. Handheld works for patrol, and shoulder-mounted for tactical. Pick the right one for the job.
  • Your payload. Use Inert for training, Live for standard ops, Live-X and Live-Maxx when you need more punch, and VXR, if you need to reach out further.
  • Air systems. This is the gas (HPA tanks, fill kits, and regulators). It’s the core of a weapon that cycles. We’ve seen good launchers fail because the air system was an afterthought.
  • Mags, hoppers, slings, cases, vests, holsters. This is the stuff that turns a launcher into something you can actually use on duty.

You can have the best launcher on the market. But if your air system is undersized or your mags are misfeeding, you’re not operational.

Selecting the Right Launcher for Your Agency

Different units need different launchers. The right launcher saves money, too. You’re not paying for features you don’t need.

Here’s how agencies match hardware to mission.

For Patrol, you need something compact and lightweight. Something easy to grab from the car or wear on a vest rig. Compact launchers (e.g., FTC, TAC-SA Patrol, or VK-SBL) and/or handheld launchers (e.g., BLAST) work perfectly. They integrate into standard patrol gear without adding bulk.

Mobile Field Force and crowd control need a range and capacity. Shoulder-mounted launchers (e.g., TAC-SA PRO or VK-SBL) with larger projectile loads let you engage from safer distances and stay in the fight longer.

Inside the correctional facility, ranges are short, but engagement windows are tight. You need a launcher that deploys fast and works in confined spaces. Compact models with quick reloads are the move.

For tactical units, precision and repeatability matter most. Launchers with sighting mechanisms, consistent pressure systems, and robust build quality (e.g., TAC-SA PRO or VKS Phantom). You need to put rounds exactly where you want them.

We carry the full line of PepperBall launchers for every unit type. If you’re not sure which fits your team, our certified instructors will walk you through it.

Matching Projectile Types to Mission Goals

This is where most agencies overthink it. Or worse, underthink it.

The PepperBall projectiles guide is actually simple. There are four main types and a few specialties. One correct answer for each situation.

Type PAVA Situation Additional Information
Inert None Force-on-force training, familiarization, drills Identical ballistics to live rounds. No PAVA exposure. Your officers need training. This is the most cost-effective way to get hands-on training.
Live 2% Standard patrol and tactical deployments Lowest level of reliable incapacitation. Excellent for direct impact and for area saturation in interior spaces. This is your daily driver.
Live-X 5% Consistent and reliable effect, resistant subjects, large crowds. Enhanced PAVA exposure. Excellent for direct impact and for area saturation in both inside and outside environments.
Live Maxx MAXSAICIN™ formula (advanced) Critical incidents, top-tier threat response It is called Live Maxx for a reason. The top of the pyramid. When nothing less will do. Offers the greatest bio-availability of the PAVA, resulting in significantly more intense exposure.
VXR Varies (extended range) Crowd management, open areas, perimeter control Engages from farther out than standard round projectiles allow (with harder impact). Extends your reach.
Marking None Marking suspects or objects Used to mark suspects for later apprehension and/or marking doors, openings, or objects for identification.
Glass Breaker None Breaking out windows or automobile glass Break out:

  • Residential windows & automobile glass with glass breakers
  • Tempered and reinforced glass with VXR Shatter

Not for use on humans or animals.

We keep all of these in stock with same-day shipping. Browse our full line of PepperBall projectiles and see for yourself.

A note on planning: Don’t just buy operational rounds. Buy Inert for training. Nothing worse than burning Live rounds on drills because your training inventory ran dry.

Planning Air System Capacity and Shot Counts

Your PepperBall air system setup is a logistics problem. Get this wrong, and your launchers become dead weight halfway through a mission.

The industry runs on two pressure platforms. 3,000 PSI and 4,500 PSI.

3,000 PSI is common as it works with most standard 3000 PSI SCUBA tanks. Good for patrol and general duty.

4,500 PSI gives you more shots per fill. Better for tactical units and high-volume deployments. But you need a PepperBall compressor to fill your 4,500 PSI high pressure air bottle to that volume.

Expected deployments per fill vary by launcher and pressure. A patrol launcher on a 3,000 PSI tank might give you 60-70 shots. A tactical setup on 4,500 PSI extends that shot count.

Ask yourself: How many engagements before you can refill? If you’re equipping an entire shift or a correctional facility, that number matters.

Refill logistics

Do you have a fill station on site? If not, you’re sending tanks back and forth or driving to another agency that has a fill station. Neither is acceptable for a duty-ready unit.

We can help you plan this. Call 513-550-7425 and ask about our complete air system packages. Tanks, fill kits, regulators and compressors. Everything you need to keep your PepperBall loadout powered up and ready for any mission.

How Agencies Build Loadouts for Entire Shifts or Facilities

One launcher is not a loadout. One box of projectiles is not an inventory.

Agencies that do this well follow a simple framework.

Inventory planning. Start with headcount. Multiply by mission requirements. Add training burn rate. Then add spare.

Example: A 20-person unit running monthly training burns 240 Inert rounds per year just on drills. That’s before operational inventory. Plan for it.

Maintenance cycles. Air systems need seals maintenance. SCUBA tanks need visual inspections as well as hydro testing. Launchers need function tests as well as lubrication. (NEVER use gun oil it will destroy your O-rings. Use PepperBall lube.) Mags and hoppers need inspection and function testing. Set a schedule. Stick to it.

Replacement schedules. Projectiles get used. Tanks degrade. Accessories wear out. Build replacement costs into your annual budget. Don’t wait until something fails on duty.

We help agencies build these plans every week. Every PepperBall product we sell comes with our certified support. Not just shipping. Real expertise.
